The Story

Enemies-to-Lovers · Hidden Supernatural World · Forced Partnership

Rainie Bai knows what she is—a descendant of Bai Su Zhen, the Legend of the White Snake—but she's never lived it. Her family fled the supernatural world three generations ago, leaving her with the bloodline but none of the customs. When her powers manifest dangerously, she's sent to Tianyuan Academy, a hidden university for supernatural descendants tucked inside Manhattan's Chinatown.

Her cousin Angie was supposed to meet her. Show her the ropes. Help her survive a world that already judges her for the stigma she carries.

Angie never shows up.

No one takes the outsider seriously—least of all Aster Rong, a fox spirit heir whose bloodline has clashed with hers for centuries. He runs his family's elite matchmaking empire, knows every power player in their hidden world, and has his own reasons for keeping Rainie Bai at arm's length.

But as more students vanish, even Aster can't ignore the pattern. Forced into an uneasy partnership, they uncover something that shouldn't be possible: someone has found a way into this hidden world.

And they're not just watching.

The World

The Yinshi world in What Venom Cannot Touch is fictional—but the mythology it's built on is real. Chinese folklore is full of spirits, beasts, and hidden worlds that most Western readers have never encountered. Here are some of the stories behind the story.

Snake Spirits:
Shé Jīng (蛇精)

The most famous snake spirit in Chinese folklore loved a mortal, healed the sick, and harmed no one—and was still imprisoned for daring to exist beyond the boundaries set for her kind. Rainie Bai carries that legacy.

Fox Spirits:
Húlijīng (狐狸精)

Fox spirits didn't create desire—they reflected it. Their real crime was wielding their own appeal as power instead of surrendering it. They survived by becoming indispensable: matchmakers, advisors, power brokers. Aster Rong is the heir to exactly that.

The Journey So Far

The Author

I'm Risa—a first-generation Chinese-American writer based in New York. I grew up hearing fragments of Chinese folklore from my parents. In 2019, I fell in love with Greek mythology retellings and realized there was a painful lack of the same for my own culture.

What Venom Cannot Touch is a love letter to every diaspora kid who grew up caught between two worlds—and to everyone who believes the future is ours to make.
